IMG_0991 The Painted Desert Inn was built by Herbert Lore in 1924 on a high perch overlooking the Painted Desert.

IMG_0993 The Inn was nicknamed the "Stone Tree House" because so much petrified wood was used in its construction. In 1935 the Park Service purchased this property and made it part of the Petrified Forest National Park.
