Elkhart, IN – Welcome to the largest woodpeg barn, Amish-built, in the world! But you are going to have to enjoy it through the couple of pictures I took, because it is now closed. The building was opened in 2007 just as the economy in this area hit bottom and they had to close this week-end because of financial problems. No one is sure what will happen to this beautiful building but there are many rumors that somebody is going to do something with it. I sure hope so.
It is really interesting to see how they used wooden pegs to hold the wood joints together rather than bolts or nail. According to their brochure, it was designed to withstand winds up to 100 miles per hour.
When it opened it was full of businesses but today very few are left. There were a couple of food vendors open (once again) so we had lunch with John and Karen. They are staying at the campground until Escapade and it was fun to have somebody to go with.
Oh how sad. This economy, unfortunately, has a long way to go to recover. Hopefully something that beautiful won't have to sit empty for too long.

We were there in "08 and the businesses were starting to dwindle then. It's a beautiful structure and so sad to see it sit empty. We saw alot of empty places, was hoping things were a little better there by now.
