We decided to take the scenic route from Crescent City, CA to Medford, OR. That would be Route 199. If you do not like narrow, winding mountain roads, this would not be the road for you. 
But if you can handle driving slowly and very carefully, this has to be one of the most scenic drives we have ever taken. And that is really saying something. The road follows alongside the Smith River all the way to Oregon. And it was phenomenal. I had to take a lot of pictures because Jim had all he could do to keep his eyes on the road and his hands on the wheel. There are some places to pull over but most of them were not where you could see through the trees to the river below. 
We would definitely take this drive again. Just plan for lots of time.
Wish we were brave like the two of you. Those high narrow roads would scare me to death. Makes for great photos though with all that beautiful scenery.
