Marguerite Bruswig Staude wanted to build a structure that would glorify her Creator and offer thanksgiving for all that her family had received.
When she and her husband visited Sedona on vacation, she determined that the perfect place to build the chapel would be among the red rocks. 
The Chapel of the Holy Cross was completed in April of 1956.
I was unable to find any information regarding the Eagle Head that watches over the Chapel.
Geez, glad you posted the eagle head. I never saw it when we were there a couple of years ago.
