They Definitely Roll Up the Sidewalks

Medora, ND  High  51  Low 39

fog2 A French nobleman, Marquis de Mores, founded the town of Medora in 1883. He named the town after his wife, Medora von Hoffman. The Marquis wanted to ship refrigerated meat to Chicago via the railroad and built a meat packing plant there. All that is left of the plant is this smokestack. (it was foggy this morning)

Their home is named the Chateau de Mores and is a museum. We decided not to spend the money to visit it. But I’m sure it is really magnificent.

But let me tell you, this time of year Medora has rolled up its sidewalks for the winter. There are two restaurants open along with a convenience store and occasionally the bar is open on no set schedule. We had lunch at the Elkhorn Cafe and we were underwhelmed. Expensive as well as mediocre. Thought about trying the Rough Rider Hotel Dining Room but the cheapest thing on their menu was a pork chop for $27. No thanks.

This place really booms in the summertime. They have a huge outdoor amphitheater where musicals are performed. Offer a pitchfork steak fondue which is $29 for your steak and a buffet. We did that once years ago and we don’t need to do it again.

Definitely a tourist town.

  2. We are not into expensive restaurant meals either, would much rather make it myself at home.

  3. We don't have outrageous pricing on Campobello, but in another 2 weeks sidewalks will be rolled up here as well. As of now there is still one open restaurant and the Roosevelt Park is still open.

  4. We thought Fort Abraham Lincoln was expensive and decided to turn around and leave. The girl at the gate, told us it was worth it so we did it. We're so glad we did. We did the pitchfork dinner once. Bill cooks better steaks on the grill.

  5. Maybe a little place like that should have high season and off season prices.

  6. Not sure I'd be interested in stopping. Sometimes it's all about the location but mostly it's all about the food. I guess we pick and choose where and what we want to see and the same for eating.

  7. Sounds like they are serving tourist food - mediocre @ high prices.

  8. So, what are you doing in North Dakota at this late date? How far east are you planning on driving before you head back to Arizona? I would imagine most tourists, RVers, etc have left that part of the country by now.

Are the prices high since the oil business is booming (not so much now) in that area?

    Have fun out there.

  9. WOW a lot of pork chops can be bought for that price. Even for a tourist place that crazy, must get some rich folks passing through there to ask those prices.

We had quite a rain here yesterday and the temps are in the low 70's but it won't last back up into the 90's next week so enjoy the cooler temps for a little while longer

  10. Haven't really had time to read blogs lately and I only just now saw your post from last night. We just drove past the turn off from 85 onto the I-94 and Medora only about an hour or so ago. Too bad, we could have tried to meet up somewhere. Right now we are sitting outside the library in Bowman, ND just a little north of you. Hoping to say in Custer Nat'l Forest tonight just inside the South Dakota border.

  12. The house was neat, not much in that town with all the sidewalks out.
