Makoshika State Park

Glendive, MT  High 79  Low 52

DSCN1135

Makoshika (Ma KO shi ka) is a Lakota phrase meaning land of bad spirits, or badlands. Makoshika became a Montana State Park in 1953 and covers 11,538 acres, which makes it Montana’s largest state park.

Over ten species of dinosaurs have been found in the park including the Triceratops and Tyrannosaurus rex.

This is a cast replica of a Thescetosaurus skeleton found in the park. There were even patches of skin found which is extremely rare.

There is a small museum at the visitor’s center with a short movie on the park which is well worth a visit.

It was really interesting to think that dinosaurs trod the earth where we were camped. This is the campground. No hookups and no cell service. Quiet and beautiful.

DSCN1202

We were the only ones in the campground on Wednesday night.

This is the official park roadblock. These horses are “owned” but are wild and allowed to roam the park.

I am just going to post a few of the pictures we took of the park. It really is a place of beauty.

And one last piece of advice – Don’t Become EXTINCT – BUCKLE UP. (sorry my picture is so blurry)

  3. Great place to spend time, especially since you do not have to worry about roaming dinosaurs:)

  4. How nice that you don't have to share it with anyone.

  5. That looks like a really beautiful place to be. I'd love for my grandson Liam to see where dinosaurs roamed.

  6. I like the roadblock. I bet you have a hundred pictures on your camera of that. At least I would have taken that many.
