ROAD TO THE RALLY

I forgot to post these pictures showing the snow on the top of the Superstitions after our storm last week-end. And it is much too pretty not to post.

We headed out for Vee Quiva Casino about 1:00 Tuesday afternoon. I thought we wouldn’t run into quite as much traffic at that time of day. Wrong.

IMG_4284 Where in the world are all these people going in the middle of the day.

Thank goodness we weren’t going all that far. We were at the casino by 2:30. We were later joined by a Class A and a Class C. I had thought there would be several rigs but no.

The casino is nothing to get excited about. Just a squat building and not very pretty. I didn’t even take a picture of it.

But I did have to take a picture of the toilet. Now I don’t normally take pictures of toilets but I had never seen this before.

Push the green button and the toilet seat cover moves around to give you a clean seat. Just cracked me up. And they have the instructions in both English and Spanish

 IMG_4272 IMG_4273

We spent a very peaceful night.

Wednesday morning Jan called when they (the other four rigs) were almost to the casino. We pulled down about two minutes before they got to us and we led the way to the Rally.

More tomorrow.

FISH!

IMG_4270 Now this is one beautiful big mouth bass. Needless to say, this was a keeper. Jim also had another nice size bass but for some reason we didn’t get a picture of it before it became filets.

He’s been having a great time going fishing and all of a sudden lots of the guys in the park have decided that they might want to go with him. For fishing purposes he only wants to take out one other guy, so we may have to put up a sign up sheet. A lot of the guys are getting ready to head out but have already told him that they want to fish next fall when we get here. Works for me.

Apache Junction got almost an inch and a 1/4 of rain this week-end but the sun is shining today. Still chilly out there though.

We are headed out today. We are going to the Good Sam Rally over in west Phoenix at the racetrack. This afternoon we are going to Vee Quiva Casino where we’ll spend the night. That way we don’t have to fight all the rush hour traffic in the morning. We have four other couples who will be heading up from the Casa Grand area who will be joining us Wednesday morning. We’ll all go to the Rally together so we can park together.

We are going to be boondocking and the battery on my computer is shot, so I’m not sure how much posting I will be doing. I’ve also had the slowest internet connection later and I’ve had a lot of trouble commenting on blogs. But I am reading them when I can pull them up. Hopefully as people head north, that will ease the useage of the internet and I’ll have better connections.

When Jim’s not fishing I keep him busy with other projects.

No snow.

I didn’t take any of these pictures because the battery in my camera died. Not sure who took the pictures but they are beautiful and I do appreciate finding them.

ST PATRICK’S DAY

kiss me

Anybody know why we  celebrate on March 17 with green beer? Here’s a little history lesson about this day.

The person who was to become St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, was born in Wales about AD 385. His given name was Maewyn.

Far from being a saint, until he was 16, he considered himself a pagan. At that age, he was sold into slavery by a group of Irish marauders that raided his village. During his captivity he became a Christian and adopted the name Patrick. He escaped from slavery after six years and went to Gaul where he studied in the monastery for a period of twelve years. His wishes were to return to Ireland, to convert the native pagans to Christianity.

Patrick used the three leaf clover in his sermons to represent how the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit could all exist as separate elements of the same entity. His mission in Ireland lasted for thirty years.

St. Patrick's Day is celebrated on March 17, the anniversary of his death in the fifth century (believed to have been on March 17, 461).  On St. Patrick's Day, which falls during Lent, Irish families would traditionally attend church in the morning and celebrate in the afternoon. Lenten prohibitions against the consumption of meat were waived and people would dance, drink and feast--on the traditional meal of Irish bacon and cabbage.

Irish bacon not corned beef? Though cabbage has long been an Irish food, corned beef only began to be associated with St. Patrick’s day at the turn of the century. Irish immigrants living on NYC’s lower east side substituted corned beef for their traditional dish of Irish bacon to save money. They learned about the cheaper alternative from their Jewish neighbors.

Saint Patrick was made a saint by the Catholic Church and Saint Patrick’s Day was only celebrated as a religious holiday until 1903 when it became a public holiday.

Did you know that the first parade held to honor St. Patrick's Day took place not in Ireland but in the New York City. On March 17, 1762, Irish soldiers serving in the English military marched through the city.

Legend says that each leaf of the four leaf clover means something: the first is for hope, the second for faith, the third for love and the fourth for luck.

Today, people celebrate the day with parades, wearing of the green, and drinking beer. One reason St. Patrick's Day might have become so popular is that it takes place just a few days before the first day of spring. One might say it has become the first green of spring.

green beer Why green beer? This is purely American in origin. Some person, most likely not Irish at all decided to desecrate beer in the name of St. Patrick.

We Americans also turn the water green in Chicago every year. At least I think we do. I’ve never been there to see it.

What is a leprechaun?

leprechaun A leprechaun is an Irish fairy who looks like a small, old man about 2 feet tall.

According to legend, leprechauns are aloof and unfriendly. They live alone, and pass the time making shoes. They also have a hidden pot of gold!

Treasure hunters can often track down a leprechaun by the sound of his shoemaker's hammer. If the leprechaun is caught, he can be threatened with bodily violence to tell where his treasure is, but the leprechaun's captors must keep their eyes on him every second. If the captor's eyes leave the leprechaun - he's known to trick them into looking away - he vanishes and all hopes of finding the treasure are lost.

And we definitely must not forget about one of my favorites:

irish soda bread

Amazing Easy Irish Soda Bread

Ingredients
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 4 tablespoons white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup margarine, softened
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted
  • 1/4 cup buttermilk

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Lightly grease a large baking sheet.
  2. In a large bowl, mix together flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, salt and margarine. Stir in 1 cup of buttermilk, egg, and raisin. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead slightly. Form dough into a round and place on prepared baking sheet. In a small bowl, combine melted butter with 1/4 cup buttermilk; brush loaf with this mixture. Use a sharp knife to cut an 'X' into the top of the loaf.
  3. Bake in preheated oven for 45 to 50 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the loaf comes out clean, about 30 to 50 minutes. You may continue to brush the loaf with the butter mixture while it bakes.

Do any of you have any other ways to celebrate the day?

NOT MUCH GOING ON

Except that Jim is fishing. He went out Wednesday, Thursday and he’s going out again today. He is one happy, happy man. Hasn’t had much luck catching but who cares.

On Tuesday, we got to meet Susan of  What's Up With Susan and Company   and her son Ted. Ted needed to rewire Susan’s brakes on her truck and Jim had the tools that he needed. What a great young man. He knew what he was doing and was more than willing to do it all. Susan and I just talked and talked. So much fun to meet other RVers. She’s headed for a workamping position in Texas.

We also got to meet Angel. She is really a Mama’s girl. We were so busy visiting I forgot to take any pictures so I “borrowed” this one from Susan’s blog.

susan and angel

My great excitement for the week was getting our tax return filed. I am so glad that is over with for another year.

Other than that, I’ve been reading and keeping the girls company. Next Tuesday we will be heading out to the Good Sam Rally which is being held out at the Phoenix International Raceway. I am beyond excited that our wheels will actually move again, if only for a few days.

JIM GETS TO GO FISHING

funny fishing pic

Jim went to see his surgeon today and he is doing so well that he has no restrictions. It’s only been six weeks and I am just amazed that he has recovered so completely and so rapidly.

He has no back pain but his legs cramp when he walks. He talked to the doctor about this and was told this is normal. Back surgery can produce leg cramps and also he is walking differently then he did when his back hurt so bad. This will eventually go away.

Jim hasn’t had to take any Tylenol for so long I can’t remember when he last had any. He used to live on the stuff which is not good for you. No more.

I’m hoping he still watches what he is doing and bends properly using his legs and core more than his back. And no lifting things – like the generator by himself.

He is so excited.

MEET RETIRED ROD

IMG_4258

I knew that Rod was in Apache Junction from following his blog and last Tuesday morning Jim and I finally tracked him down. We also got to meet Loyce and Biscuit. We had a bunch of errands to run so we just visited for a few minutes.

I forgot to take a picture of Biscuit so I just kind of took this one from their blog. Such a cutie.

biscuit

We invited Rod and Loyce to join us at Superstition Skies on Wednesday night and they were actually brave enough to show up. You just never know how crazy we might get. Dianna and Dottie also joined us and we had a great visit and some more good food. I think we can look forward to Rod and Loyce joining us for more good times at the Skies.

Rod and Loyce are having a winter home built out here in Apache Junction (or is it actually in Mesa?) and are hoping it will be ready for them when they come back down later this year. They are getting ready to head back to Kansas and grandbabies around the 20th of March. Check out Rod’s blog to see how beautiful it’s going to be.

Hopefully we’ll get to see them again before they leave the area. Thanks you guys. We had a great time visiting with you.

Rod took this picture of us with my camera and thinks I should post it. I really don’t like pictures of me in the blog but here goes anyhow.

This one’s for you, Rod.
