THUNDERSHIRT

Several of you had questions about Scooter’s Thundershirt so I thought I’d post a picture of her wearing it.

According to their website the Thundershirt wrap works by applying constant, gentle pressure to the animal’s torso. This has a significant calming effect for most dogs.

And it really does help Scooter. She isn’t so much afraid of the storms or fireworks as she wants to attack them. And she seems to really like her Thundershirt. She absolutely would not let us put a sweater or anything like that on her but when we tell her we’re going to get the Thundershirt, she just waits patiently for us to get it done. She’s still not happy about the storm but I don’t worry about her having a heart attack.

Skittlez is afraid of everything. From people to other animals to a leaf or bag blowing across the yard. But thunderstorms and fireworks done’ bother her at all. So she doesn’t have a Thundershirt.

I also want to answer a question that somebody asked awhile ago – I am so sorry but I don’t remember who or when asked the question.

They wanted to know where we will put the patio set we bought when we finally get to move again. We actually lease our spot here in Apache Junction, AZ by the year. We found that works for us because we can come and go as we please and still have a place to sit if we run out of money or energy. This year it has been a life saver because of all the medical issues Jim has had.

This is our sport in Apache Junction at the Santa Fe RV Park.

Also, this year we put a shed on our lot at the back end of the sidewalk and we will be leaving the patio set in the shed when we leave. We have a couple of chairs that fold that we take with us in the fiver for the summer.

Thanks Linda – we also leave one of our boats here during the summer but not actually on our lot. Our neighbor across the street has a park model with a carport and he lets us leave the boat under the carport. That really does help to protect it from the sun and dust storms.

  1. Thanks for telling us about your leased lot. That explains so much. I wondered where you leave the boat, too.

  2. Thanks for the info on the Thundercoat. I thought maybe it was one of those rip-offs. Annie might benefit from one because she has separation anxiety whenever I leave - even with Roger being home. Glad Jim is continuing to improve.

  3. I asked about the patio set, Sandie. I guess I should have figured it out, but I have trouble keeping track of what day it is so I forget, sometimes, what happens from blog to blog.

I laughed about Scooter's Thundercoat because when Jack was a crazy puppy (and labs really are crazy puppies), one of us would get him and lay on him holding him absolutely still--my daughter is actually best at it. It would calm him right down. I had seen a piece on calming autistic children so that's where I got the idea. I just looked it up, and it's very interesting if you care to look http://www.grandin.com/inc/squeeze.html I think it's the deep touch that calms Scooter. Neither Lizzie nor Jack were ever afraid of thunder and lightening. Lizzie, as she got older developed a phobia about floors--almost OCD. Well, that's just my theory. :)

Glad to see you and Jim are doing well.

  4. Just starting to catch up on everyone. So glad Jim is doing okay, what a relief for both of you.
So glad Riggs isnt afraid of storms, sometimes if thunder bad enough that it shakes something, then he'll bark and run to the patio door and be on 'intruder' alert.

  11. Well doesn't Scooter look like a little doll with that Tshirt on. Too cute. Glad it works.
Yes, I remember Skittlez be a big wimp when I was there. She cracks me up.
Hope Jim is continuing to do super.

  12. Glad Scooter likes her Thundershirt. It didn't make a bit of difference to Poppy - she just wanted it OFF!! Guess she is too old and set in her ways...or maybe she just gets too hot.

  13. Thx for the info on the ThunderShirt...I've been contemplating getting one for Killer. Storms terrify him, poor little fella just shakes all over. I will pick him up one when we go out again. Scooter looks adorable!

  14. I've read about the Thundershirts--my sister's dog needs one, Spot is terrified of the thunder and lightening--they live in Arkansas and get lots of both. When Emmi came to live in our household we tried very hard not to make a big deal of thunder, gunshots, etc. and it worked--she isn't afraid of anything except not getting to "go" when we leave.:)

  15. Love Scooter's Thundershirt. Might have to think about one for Bennie. As he's gotten older he is now terrified of heavy rain and thunder - really any unusual noise.
