Helena, MT High 82 Low 58
Got a phone call Friday from Polly and Vern. They had just left Escapade in Gillette and were headed our direction. They were spending Friday night in Reed Point, MT and then they’d be in Helena Saturday and Sunday.
Let me tell you, having friends show up here in Helena is right near the top of my favorites list. It really helps to break up the routine we get into and that’s a good thing.
Saturday afternoon we gave Polly and Vern a tour of our fair city (which doesn’t take very long) and showed them our “spot” when we had to take a break to feed the girls and let them out to hunt for a little while.
Showed them a couple more spots and then went to the downtown walking mall on Last Chance Gulch. We stopped in the Rialto – one of the oldest bars in town and then headed down to the Windbag Saloon for dinner. The Windbag used to be Big Dorothy’s House of Ill Repute up until 1973.
After dinner we strolled back down the Gulch and just had to stop to let the guys get some ice cream. Vern turned his back just as I took this picture.
Gypsy – does all this sound familiar to you? We have a tendency to take everybody to the same place when they show up here.
Sunday we took a drive up to a couple of the lakes where Jim does his fishing. Then Polly fixed us one of the best dinners ever. She is really a great cook. We had pork chops, creamed potatoes, mixed veggies, and fried apples. Then she sent us home with a doggie bag.
They left this morning and are headed to Glacier Park and points west.
Jim went fishing. Caught a couple of small ones and put them back to grow up. Had a nasty looking storm roll through but it blew right on past us and only dripped a few drops of rain.
Tomorrow is my sister’s birthday and we’re going to try out a new restaurant tomorrow night. Another one of my favorite things.
Oh WOW...what a nice visit. The Windbag Saloon sounds fun...I guess they had to change the name!
ReplyDeleteEating out is one of my favorite things to do too! Enjoy.
What fun! and headng to Glacier??/ oh, joy ... I was there this time last year too... and remember Gypsy coming by to meet you guys before heading to Kalispell... wow... gorgeous... think I'll go have a sugar free Klondike bar.
ReplyDeleteI'm listening to Elvis' Trilogy on YouTube... man!... that's goooood stuff.
When you started talking about touring Helena I immediately thought of the Gulch! I sure hope to get back there some time - loved it!
ReplyDeleteInteresting saloon names! Do they have any history or just for the atmosphere?
ReplyDeleteWow! They move quickly. We still aren't out of Wyoming.
ReplyDeleteIt's pretty nice when you're invited to dinner and you get a doggie bag to take with you. It's like two meals in one.
ReplyDeleteWe love meeting up with Blogger friends also. Pam and John, Oh The Places We Go, will be here on Thursday for a few days. We should have a great time also.
ReplyDeleteNow I know we're going back to Helena. There just isn't enough time to see it in a couple of days. I'm still wishing the weather would have allowed us to do the Gates of the West. billandjanrvingtheusa.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteNice to have friends from there visit you here, isn't it. Good to speak rvese too.
ReplyDeleteBars and saloons? Am I detecting a pattern here?
ReplyDeleteAt least you were able to dilute some of that alcohol with ice cream! :cD
Good food, good fun, and good friends. What more do you need? :-)
ReplyDeleteIt's good to visit with friends. That's Dave's favorite part about being back in Minneapolis full time. He's off visiting this afternoon.
ReplyDeleteFried apples sound really good with pork chops but I have never tried that. What's the method? I used to serve hot homemade chunky applesauce.
ReplyDeleteGood times for sure!
ReplyDeleteMy gosh, it's so darn hard to catch up when you're away from blogs for a couple of days. Sounds like you had a great time with friends, but then you and Jim sound like you'd be lots of fun to be with. Scratches and pats to S&S!
ReplyDeleteWe also like trying new restaurants.
ReplyDeleteHey ! I want someone to cook me a great meal like that !
