We’re Still Here

Helena, MT  High 90  Low 55

We all rejoiced when the fireworks finished on the 5th of July. Skittlez, especially, was really happy.

We had dinner at my sister’s house on the 4th which is always a good time.

The most exciting thing to happen around here was our friends came to town. Ed and Linda were headed from Glacier to West Yellowstone and made a stop over the week-end here in Helena.

Ed and Linda

We first met these folks in Quartzsite, AZ in January 2010. We had a great time visiting and catching up on all our adventures.

On the 4th Ed and Jim went fishing. They had such a good time it ended up being a marathon day. They headed out at 5:00 a.m. and didn’t come home until almost 5:00 p.m. Ed got to take some walleye home for dinner and was a really happy fisherman.

We were watching TV Sunday night when all of a sudden, I saw antlers moving past our window. This fine fellow decided to enjoy part of our tree for his dinner. (taken between the blind slats)

I really don’t know how to make one of those neat maps that so many people have on their blogs and I thank everybody who tried to help me with suggestions. This is what I finally came up with.

This is our very tentative plan for our journey to Virginia in September. We are leaving Billings, MT on September 2. We don’t plan on doing a lot of sightseeing along the way but do you have any suggestions for a “do not miss” sight?

We are headed to Virginia to visit with Jim’s family and we want to spend most of our time exploring Virginia – especially the Civil War sites. I haven’t figured out what our route from Virginia to Arizona will be.

Also, if you are anywhere near our stops and want to meet up, we would really enjoy that.

  1. I'm impressed with your map. I'm lucky to just be able to spell "map" correctly, let alone post one! ;c)

  2. I enjoy looking at the maps that people post in their blogs, but I also haven't figured out how to do it.

  3. We hope to be in Virginia sometime in September also. However, the RV won't be with us. I love checking out the civil war sites. You'll have a great trip I am sure.

  4. Other than the Corn Palace in Mitchell, SD, I'm not coming up with anything.

  5. Looks like your map only got you to West Virginia. Remember to stop by here if you decide to go a little further south coming or going.

  6. I've only ever driven them in an SUV so I don't know about a big rig, but any miles you can drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway or Skyline Drive in the Shenandoah are well worth it. Of the battlefields, my favorite has always been Antietam, although I walked the route the battle took during one day, and could really feel what had happened. Most folks just drive by, slowing down when they come to a marker, but that's it. Gettysburg is probably the best although things have changed there and you can't see it like you used to be able to just walk around and see it. I think they will have a Disney-like park before long. Fredericksburg is also a good one. By the time you take in 2 or 3 battlefields you will be sick of what happened back then - Americans killing Americans with such fervor. It makes my stomach turn now. I've been away too long to remember when the leaves turn in the various states, but I hope you get to see some of the beautiful fall colors. Nothing in the west can compare, in my opinion.

  7. The map looks great to me! You'll be traveling at a nice time of year--probably with the leaf peepers on part of the trip the nearer you get to Virginia. I don't know where I'll be or what's happening, but I don't think Jack and I can travel up to Virginia as much as we'd love to meet you, Jim, and the girls. Depending upon your return trip, if you happen come closer to Georgia and Jack can still get in the truck I'd love to meet you for lunch or dinner. I can drive up to the mountains. If it's cool enough, he can sleep in the back seat which is one big bed for him and I have an Endless Breeze fan that I run. If not, I'll leave the truck running with the air on if I can find the place. If not, we could just grab a cup of coffee.

How exciting that Jim is going to see his family. I hope you have a wonderful time even if we can't meet on this trip. So glad the girls did okay during the fireworks.

  8. Nothing wrong with that map, serves the purpose, and looks pretty good.
    Enjoy your travels.

  9. We will also be traveling that way. From Minnesota to Arizona about the middle of October.

  10. Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Museum! A do not miss for Jim

Be sure to avoid I -65 south of Indy...get off at Exit for Whiteland, IN....go west to US 31 south to where it merges with I 65 just north of the ohio River....Louisville.

Oh, there is a state forest where you can camp for the night around Henryville, IN.

Not much camping in the Louisville area.

Kentucky Horse Parks is a must see too.

Also....the Corvette Museum further south on 64

Then Berea, KY.....before you arrive at Berea there is A Kentucky Artists building....everything made by "natives"

I'll email you if and when I think of more.

  11. If it was me making that trip I'd have to drop down to Decatur, IL, to see my Dad but I doubt you want to make that one of your stops. :)

  14. Looks like a pretty good route. Bob was born and spent the first ten years of his life very close to Sac City IA.

  15. Sure hope we get to see you before you leave! We are still in central CA and it feels like we are dragging our feet. At least the whole rim road at Crater Lake is open so Doug is happy!
